Dollar Tree Fined For Selling Toxic Kids Products

Dollar Tree to Pay Nearly $200,000 for Selling Toxic School Supplies

Investigation Finds School Supplies with Lead Levels Exceeding Legal Limits

Dollar Tree Agrees to Pay Fine and Enhance Testing

Dollar Tree will pay $190,000 after an investigation by the Washington Department of Ecology found that school supplies sold at the store contained lead levels exceeding the legal limit by four times. The investigation, conducted between 2018 and 2021, revealed that children's bracelets and pencil pouches contained high levels of the toxic metal.

In a legally binding resolution, Dollar Tree agreed to pay the fine and to more thoroughly test school supplies for lead before selling them in Washington state. The company also agreed to improve its compliance with other consumer protection laws.

The Washington State Attorney General's Office said the agreement "will help protect Washington consumers from unsafe products and ensure businesses comply with the law." The fine sends a clear message that businesses cannot sell products that pose a health risk to children.

Dollar Tree is committed to ensuring that the products it sells are safe for customers. The company has already taken steps to implement the new testing procedures and to improve its compliance with consumer protection laws. Dollar Tree is also working with its suppliers to ensure that all products meet the highest safety standards.
