Breaking: Illinois Fighting Illini Quarterback Tommy DeVito Enters Transfer Portal

DeVito to Explore Other Programs After Two Seasons as Illini Starting Quarterback

After two seasons as the starting quarterback for the University of Illinois Fighting Illini, Tommy DeVito has entered the NCAA Transfer Portal.

DeVito, a Syracuse transfer, threw for 2,881 yards and 16 touchdowns with 11 interceptions in 2022, his first season as the full-time starter for the Illini.

He also ran for 348 yards and four touchdowns, showcasing his dual-threat abilities.

Offensive Coordinator Departing as Well

In a separate development, Illinois offensive coordinator Barry Lunney Jr. is also leaving the program, sources told Illini Inquirer.

Lunney, who joined the Illini in December 2020, will become the new offensive coordinator at Mississippi State under Zach Arnett, a source confirmed.

Lunney's departure comes just two days after Illinois head coach Bret Bielema announced that he had fired defensive coordinator Ryan Walters following the Illini's 8-5 regular season and a loss to Mississippi State in the ReliaQuest Bowl.

What's Next for Illini Football?

With both the starting quarterback and offensive coordinator leaving, Illinois will have some major holes to fill on the offensive side of the ball.

The Illini have several options at quarterback, including redshirt sophomore Artur Sitkowski, who started two games in 2022, and incoming four-star recruit Donovan Leary.

But Lunney's departure could make it more difficult to attract top recruits and transfer portal candidates.

Illini Looking Forward to 2023 Season

Despite the coaching changes, Illinois is still optimistic about the future under Bielema.

The Illini return several key players on both sides of the ball, including All-Big Ten defensive back Sydney Brown and running back Chase Brown.

Illinois will open the 2023 season at home against Eastern Michigan on Sept. 2.
