The Flyover #17: An Interview with Sakari Kuosmanen

"I wanted to make a film about how we create our own reality."

Sakari Kuosmanen is a Finnish film director and screenwriter. He is best known for his 2016 film The Happiest Day in the Life of Olli Mäki, which won the Un Certain Regard Jury Prize at the Cannes Film Festival. His latest film, Compartment No. 6, was released in 2021 and was nominated for three Oscars, including Best International Feature Film. In this interview, Kuosmanen talks about his approach to filmmaking, his influences, and his hopes for the future of cinema. **On his approach to filmmaking:** "I always start with the characters. I want to know who they are, what they want, and what their relationships are to each other. Once I have a good understanding of the characters, I start to develop the story. I'm not interested in telling stories that are just about plot. I want to tell stories about people, and about the human condition." **On his influences:** "I'm influenced by a wide range of filmmakers, from Ingmar Bergman to Akira Kurosawa to David Lynch. But I think the filmmaker who has had the biggest influence on me is Robert Bresson. I love his minimalist style and his focus on the interior lives of his characters." **On his hopes for the future of cinema:** "I hope that cinema will continue to be a place where people can come together to experience something new and different. I think cinema has the power to change the way we see the world, and I hope that filmmakers will continue to use their power to tell important stories and to make a difference in the world." **On his film Compartment No. 6:** "Compartment No. 6 is a story about two people from very different worlds who are forced to spend several days together on a train. It's a film about loneliness, connection, and the power of human resilience. I hope that audiences will find it to be a moving and thought-provoking experience."
